Wild Orchids in La Jolla?!

While working one day in Emerald Cove in La Jolla, I noticed this little plant with tiny white flowers growing in the mulch near the garage. I instantly knew this wasn’t just another weed or a weak alyssum volunteer.

I had to get down flat on the ground to get a decent look at it. And what did I find?!? A type of Spiranthes or Lady’s Tresses, a terrestrial orchid native to many parts of the world.

And growing wild, right here in La Jolla!!

Enjoy, Chuck!

Can you see the orchid?!
Can you see it now?
How about now?
Let’s get down there real close….
Is that a quarter on the ground?
Spiranthes or Lady’s Tresses!!!
There it is!
